TL 15 To Keep Your Jewelry Safe

A jewelry safe is a safe that is designed to secure expensive jewelry and other personal valuables from burglary and from damage due to a fire. These safes are specially designed to resist break-ins, even by professional burglars. You can tell how secure a safe is by the burglary rating assigned to it.

Burglary ratings are specified in minutes, and give an indication of how difficult it is to break into a given safe. An example jewelry safe burglary rating would be a TL-15 rating. This means that the safe would resist break-in by a knowledgeable person (such as a professional locksmith) using common locksmithing power and hand tools for at least 15 minutes. A TL-30 rating would provide the same protection, except for a period of 30 minutes. While this may not seem like a long time, it is an eternity to a professional burglar, who must rely on a quick in-and-out in order not to be caught. A TL-15 or TL-30 burglary rating makes for a very secure safe.

Another rating, the fireproof rating, is important when choosing a jewelry safe. Fireproof ratings are usually specified in minutes or hours, and give an indication of how well the safe will protect the contents during fire conditions. An example fire rating would be a 1-1/2 hour 350 degree F fire rating. This means that the jewelry safe could be exposed to a 1700 degree F fire for a period of 1-1/2 hours, and that the temperature inside the safe would not rise above 350 degrees F. This is a low enough temperature to protect most jewelry items from permanent damage.

Another factor to consider when choosing a jewelry safe is the type of locking mechanism used. Models are available with a traditional mechanical combination dial and with an electronic keypad locking mechanism. When choosing a combination dial, look for one with a more secure 4-number combination. A jewelry safe with an electronic keypad locking mechanism provides the most convenience. In order to open the safe, the user simply enters the combination on a PIN pad, similar to the ones used on ATM or debit-card machines. Multiple users with multiple pin numbers can be granted access with this type of locking mechanism. In addition, models are available that provide an audit trail, showing when the safe was accessed and by whom.

Something else to consider when choosing a jewelry safe is the total amount of storage provided and the arrangement of the interior. You should choose a model with a bit more storage space than you need so that you will not have to purchase a new safe if you need more storage. Models are available with adjustable shelving on the inside as well, providing more convenient storage and access for your jewelry.

As you can see, there are a number of factors to consider when choosing a jewelry safe. You should consider the burglary rating, fire rating, the type of locking mechanism, and the overall amount and type of storage provided. Considering all of these factors will help ensure that you choose the jewelry safe that is right for you.
